There are three keys to success for having killer improvements in strength and body composition. First, you’ve got to kill every workout. Second, you must eat to satisfy the demands of destroying your workouts. Third, you must sleep to satisfy the demands of having killer workouts. Today, we’re going to focus on the third factor, which receives less attention than it is rightfully due. Time to get Mummified.
Why aren’t we getting enough sleep?
If you go to the gym in hopes of becoming a freak, you have two primary desires – increasing muscle and decreasing fat. Now think about this. As a population average, people who do not get enough sleep have more body fat and less muscle. Why is that the case? It could be due to a number of different reasons.
One explanation is that everything comes back to training. If you have a crap night of sleep, how hard are you going to be hitting the weights the next day? Spoiler alert: not very hard! On the flip side, training like a beast is going to make you more tired and fatigued than not training. Any way you slice it, if you want to keep up a monstrous pace, getting at least adequate sleep is essential.
That doesn’t explain anything about people who aren’t training, though, and lack of sleep affects “regular” people the same way… If they sleep less, they’re fatter and have less muscle. This points towards a biological effect as the cause. What’s going on? It could be your natural hormone fluctuations and circadian rhythm.
Testosterone increases and cortisol decreases when we sleep. Testosterone obviously helps us build muscle and cortisol is responsible for body fat accumulation. To go along with that, rates of muscle building is highest while we’re asleep, and losing just 3 hours of sleep cuts muscle gains in half! If you’re one of those that thinks waking up in the middle of the night for a protein shake is the way to go, I hate to tell you, but you are wrong! Even if you get a total of a full 8 hours sleep, disrupting a complete nights rest reduces testosterone levels and IGF-1.
An old adage goes, “do not wake the sleeping giant.” Despite being a brute, the giant knows what is at stake and gets ample sleep. You don’t wake the sleeping giant because he’s going to be pissed off you’ve interrupted his gains! You’ve got it by now – sleep is important for achieving your goals. Some of us have barriers to quality sleep like our work schedule, kids, roommates, and so on. What can we do to make sure we’re getting all the muscle-building sleep we need?
